The Seraphien Accoe Family
Seraphien Accoe was born to Eduard Francies and Philomena (Willems) Accoe in Eeklo, Belgium on September 17, 1866.  He and his family arrived in St. John, New Brunswick on November 8, 1904 aboard the S. S. Montrose from Antwerp.  In the passenger list, Mishawaka, Indiana was listed as their final destination.  In January of 1914 Seraphien purchased a tract of land in Greene Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana from William H. Huff.  He completed the naturalization process and became a U. S. citizen in South Bend, Indiana on September 15, 1921.  On March 30, 1928 Seraphien, Mary, and daughter Margaret arrived in New York from Antwerp aboard the S.S. Pennland.  He is listed as a farmer in census records for 1930 and 1940, living in Warren township, in St. Joseph County, Indiana.  Seraphien lived in the Mishawaka area until 1955, when he went to live with his son Marcel in Dowagiac, Michigan.

Seraphien died on October 8, 1960 in Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac.  After funeral services at The De Vos Funeral Chapel, Seraphien was buried next to his wife in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.
 
Mary Louise Bracke - wife of Seraphien Accoe
Mary Louise Bracke was born in Belgium to Peter and Louise (Schelstraete) Bracke on June 17, 1863.  She married Seraphien Accoe in Belgium and raised eight children.  She became a naturalized U. S. citizen in South Bend on September 15, 1921.  Mary Louise Accoe died on August 31, 1948 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.

Helena Marie Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Sint-Laureins on March 18, 1893.  She married Octave E. DeMeyer in 1912 at St. Bavo's Catholic Church in Mishawaka and they raised five children.  Helen was a member of Mothers of World War II, New Carlisle.  Helen died on Sunday, December 5, 1965 at 5:45 a.m. in the South Bend Osteopathic Hospital after an illness that lasted two weeks.  Funeral services were held on Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Lesniak, officiating.  The DeVos Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.
 
Octave E. DeMeyer - husband of Helena Marie Accoe
Octave Erna DeMeyer was born on December 3, 1882 in Bellem, Belgium to Charles D. and Matilda (DeBates) DeMeyer.  He married Helena Marie Accoe in April of 1912 in Mishawaka, Indiana.  Octave became a naturalized U. S. citizen in South Bend on September 15, 1921.  He is listed as a farmer in the 1930 census, appearing with his wife and family while living on Grant Road in Warren Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana.  In the 1940 census he is listed as a patient of the Logansport State Hospital.  Octave died in 1947 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.

Achiel Emil Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Sint-Laureins on August 3, 1894.  After marrying Rosalie Lootens in 1916, Achiel is listed on his WWI (1918) draft card, and in the 1920 census, as a farmer living on S. Spring Street in Mishawaka.  In 1930 he is listed in the census as a farmer living with his family in German Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana.  Achiel became a naturalized U. S. citizen in South Bend on September 15, 1937.  According to his WWII draft card, Achiel was working for the Bendix Corporation in 1942.  He died on January 31, 1979 and was buried in Highland Cemetery in South Bend.
 
Rosalie Mary Lootens - wife of Achiel Emil Accoe
Rosalie Mary Lootens was born to Adolph and Victoria (Claeys) Lootens in South Bend, Indiana on November 27, 1896.  She married Achiel Emil Accoe on June 20, 1916 in Indiana and they raised four children.  Rosalie was a member of St Bavo's Church, the Altar Society of the church, a president of the Nigella Home Economics Club, and a member of Mothers of WW II.

Rosalie died at 7:30pm on Friday, May 19, 1989 in Miller's Merry Manor, LaGrange, Indiana.  Services were held at 10:00am on Tuesday, May 23 in Christ the King Catholic Church in South Bend.  Services were held in the South Bend church because St. Bavo's Catholic Church was undergoing renovation at the time.  Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Germaine Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Sint-Laureins, Belgium on February 5, 1896.  She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1904 and married Octave Meuninck in 1920 in Mishawaka.  After the death of her husband in 1944, Germaine married Honore Dhuyvetter.  They lived in Mishawaka for several years before retiring to Jensen Beach, Florida.  Germaine died on June 24, 1975 in Jensen Beach.  She was buried with her second husband, Honore, in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.
 
Octaaf Meuninck - husband of Germaine Accoe
Octaaf Meuninck was born on October 19, 1892 in Thielt, Belgium to Henri and Stephania (Vereecke) Meuninck.  He immigrated to the United States in 1913 and married Germaine Accoe on October 19, 1920.  Octaaf is listed as an oil businessman on his draft card for World War II.  He was a member of the American Legion, post no. 303 and of the Belgian-American Businessmen's Association.  Octaaf was also a member of a local Pinochle (card game) club.

Octaaf died on Thursday afternoon, December 7, 1944.  A rosary recital was held Sunday evening in St. Bavo's Roman Catholic Church.  Funeral rites were held on Monday morning at the church with the Rev. Otto J. Keller officiating.  Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.  Herman Coppens, Raymond VanDerHayden, Adolph Fobe, Rene Graveel, Predan Ghyselinck and Morris Bokhart, fellow members of the Belgian-American Businessmen's Association, served as pallbearers.
 
Honore "Ray" Dhuyvetter - second husband of Germaine Accoe
Honore Dhuyvetter was born in Ruiselede, West Flanders, Belgium on June 12, 1892.  He married Martha Coryn in Mishawaka, Indiana on June 2, 1921 but she died on May 6, 1922, two months short of her twenty-fourth birthday.  Honore married Martha Maenhout on June 13, 1929.  She brought a son, Robert, into the family from her previous marriage.  Martha died in 1942.  Honore then married Germaine (Accoe) Meuninck on November 9, 1946.  They had known each other since at least April 15, 1921 when they attended to the bride and groom in the marriage of Cyriela Dhuyvetter and Camiel Bracke.  After he retired from the Studebaker Corporation, Honore and Germaine moved to a modest home in Jensen Beach, Florida.  They were together until he died there in 1972.  After funeral services, under the direction of Thallemer Goethals Funeral Home in Mishawaka, Ray was buried with his previous wives in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Erma Katherine Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Sint-Laureins on August 6, 1901.  She appears in the 1920 U. S. Census living with the family of her brother, Achiel, in Mishawaka.  Erma graduated from Mishawaka high school in June of 1921. While in school, she played basketball for the inter-class squads.  Erma married J. Ralph Sellenberg on August 4, 1923 in Berrien County, Michigan and they raised a son and a daughter.  Erma died in 1981 and was buried next to her husband in Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Indiana.
 
J. Ralph Sellenberg - husband of Erma Katherine Accoe
J. Ralph Sellenberg was born on October 15, 1896 in Newtown, Indiana to James Franklin and Mica (Finafrock) Sellenberg.  Living with his family in Richland Township, Fountain County, Indiana, he was the second youngest of five children; three sons and two daughters in the 1900 census.  He married Erma Katherine Accoe in Berrien County, Michigan in 1923.  Census records list Ralph as an electrician at a brake factory.  He worked at the Bendix Corporation for 34 years, retiring on October 1, 1961.  Ralph was a member of the American Legion Post 303, the VFW Portage Lodge 675 F & AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies of South Bend Low 12 Club, and the Bendix Oldtimers Club.  He was also a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and was a 41-year member of the men's class of the First Methodist Church.

J. Ralph Sellenberg died suddenly on October 18, 1962.  He was changing a tire on his car, parked in front of his home around 1:00 p.m.  A neighbor saw him lying on the pavement near his car and summoned his wife, who called immediately for an ambulance.  Ralph was pronounced dead upon arrival at South Bend Memorial Hospital, having suffered a fatal heart attack.  Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at the Hollis Funeral Home.  Rev. Van W. Hinckley of the First Methodist Church officiated the services.  Burial was in Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

Martha Marie Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Sint-Laureins on August 2, 1902.  She married James Hoy York in South Bend on November 15, 1924 and they had two sons.  In 1964 she and her husband moved to Stuart, Florida where she was a member of the Stuart Alliance Church.  They lived year-round in Florida until 1977, afterwards returning to South Bend in the summers.  After her husband died, Martha maintained a residence in Stuart until she returned to South Bend permanently.  Martha celebrated her 100th birthday on August 2, 2002.

Martha Marie York, died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2002 in Countryside Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mishawaka.  Funeral services were held on December 4, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North with the Rev. Edgar D. Erskin officiating.  Cremation followed at Michiana Crematory in South Bend.
 
James Hoy York - husband of Martha Marie Accoe
James Hoy "Harry" York was born on December 12, 1895 in Asphalt, Kentucky.  His 1917 WWI draft card lists him living in Mitchell, Lawrence County, Indiana working for a cement company.  On his 1919 World War I Enrollment Card Hoy York is listed as serving in the army with a rank of private.  The 1920 census lists James H York as a Roomer in Indianapolis.  Harry married Martha Marie Accoe on November 15, 1924 in South Bend, Indiana.  In the 1940 census, Hoy, Martha and their two sons appear living at 211 E. 10th Street in Mishawaka.  Harry is listed as an inspector at an auto parts manufacturer.  Harry and Martha moved to Stuart, Florida in 1964.  He died in Stuart on March 29, 1980 and was cemated.

Marcel Edmond Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Sint-Laureins on December 21, 1903.  In the 1930 U. S. Census, Marshall Accoe appears living with his parents and youngest sister, Marguette, on their farm on Division Road in Warren Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana. In the 1940 Census, Marshal is listed with his wife Mary V. Accoe, renting the house next to his parents' house on State Route #2 in Warren Township.  After the death of his sister, Florine Hintz in 1941, Marshall and Mary raised his nephew Roger Hintz.  Marshall later farmed land north of Dowagiac, Michigan until he retired from farming.  He served several years as a lieutenant in the Twin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department until he and Mary moved to Jensen Beach, Florida in 1971.  After Mary died in 1975, Marshall lived in Mishawaka, Indiana.

Marshall died in the Cardinal Nursing Home in South Bend on Saturday, March 20, 1982.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday in Hahn's DeVos Funeral Home in Mishawaka.  The Rev. Ervin Mize of the Pennway Church of God officiated.  Afterwards, Marshall was buried next to his wife in Mount Hope Athens Cemetery in Athens, Fulton County, Indiana.
 
Mary Victoria Rhodes - wife of Marcel Edmond Accoe
Mary Victoria Rhodes was born on January 30, 1898 to Schuyler Colfax and Mary Ann (Hunter) Rhodes in Rochester, Indiana.  She married Marcel Edmond Accoe in Mishawaka on March 13, 1926.  Mary worked at the Studebaker Corporation for thirty-six years before retiring in 1961.  She was a member of the Local 5, United Auto Workers Union.  After retiring, Mary helped her husband with farm life and as a member of the Twin Lakes Fire Department Axiliary of Dowagiac.  They moved to Jensen Beach, Florida in 1971.

Mary V. Accoe died at 2:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 28, 1975 in South Bend Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer.  Funeral services were held on Thursday at the DeVos Funeral Home in Mishawaka and she was buried in Mount Hope Athens Cemetery in Athens, Indiana.

Florine Marie Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Mishawaka, Indiana on February 23, 1905.  Her family had immigrated to the United States from Eeklo, Belgium only about one year before her birth.  On August 28, 1928 she married Kenneth Carl Hintz at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, in Terre Coupe, Indiana.  They would have six children but two would not survive beyond a very early age.  She died abruptly on August 26, 1941 after a short illness, leaving a family of four small children.  After funeral services at St. Joseph's Catholic Church she was buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Mishawaka with her daughters, Shirley and Joanne.
 
Kenneth Carl Hintz - husband of Florine Marie Accoe
Kenneth Carl Hintz was born on July 31, 1905 in St. Joseph, Michigan.  After the family moved to Mishawaka, Indiana (around 1912) he left school in the eighth grade (~1919) to help at home with expenses.  In 1928 he married Florine Marie Accoe.  Living in Mishawaka, they were blessed with six children.  Between the years of 1935 and 1941 Kenneth buried his father, a brother, and two daughters, along with saying good-by to his wife of thirteen years.  As a young man of thirty-seven years he was now left to raise his three boys and daughter ranging in ages eleven, ten, four, and one year - eight months.  Kenneth worked for, and retired from, the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend, Indiana.  He died on February 17, 1989 and was buried with his family in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Mishawaka following funeral services held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Marguerite Suzanne Accoe was born to Seraphien and Marie (Bracke) Accoe in Mishawaka, Indiana on September 8, 1906.  She accompanied her parents on a trip to Belgium in February of 1928, returning on March 30th.  In 1940, she appears in the U. S. Census, living with her parents in Warren Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Marguerite later moved to Arizona where she lived the rest of her life.  She died on November 7, 1994 in Phoenix, Arizona.
