Alphonsius Accoe was born to Eduard Francies and Philomena (Willems) Accoe in Eeklo, Belgium on December 18, 1868.  In December of 1968, the town of Eeklo celebrated the life of centenarian Alfons Accoe.  In the district of Raverschoot, Eeklo, everybody was involved in the celebration.  A special committee, under the chairmanship of Julien Van Den Driessche and composed of Alfons Lips, secretary, Girard, Bergamn, J. Van Waes, R. Mercy, H. Duprex, Ph. Vrombaut, and C. DeCabooter, provided a grand and attractive program of festivities.
The celebration started with a solemn thanksgiving mass in the church of the deanery, celebrated by the Reverend Deal Ulenders and attended by the cententarian himself, his family, friends, and neighbors.  After the mass, the elder was given a warm reception at the town hall by the mayor and the elderman.  The mayor outlined, shortly, the long and stirring life of Alfons who was born in Eeklo.  Afterwards, the mayor handed him a present from the king and another from the town.  Alfons himself read loud and clear, the inscription engraved upon it.  With a cheerful twinkling in his old eyes, he added, “1868 - 1968, the years have gone by.”  Alfons, who had an astounding clearness of mind, proved that he still carried his 100 years very well by singing two songs of his boyhood.  With a firm hand he signed the town’s golden book and after a toast, the party went for the swimming pool from where they started their trip through the town.
At noon, the centenarian, his family, and the elderman celebrated with a banquet at the Trades House.  During this banquet, the members of the committee visited the house for elderly people and handed presents to everybody.  In the afternoon and evening, there was a merry celebration in “Raverschoot” district.  Besides the contests in bolling, bow shooting, billiards, and darts, there was a social gathering at the Scoutshouse for the centenarian, his family, and friends.  Alfons received lots of presents, flowers, and telegrams with congratulations. Alphonsius Accoe died on December 16, 1969.
