Chapter 3:  The Family of James Burrell

James Burrell was born on December 14, 1828 in Lincolnshire, England.  He immigrated to Canada around 1852.  On December 29, 1880 he married Isabella McGaw in Brantford, Ontario.  His marriage registration with Isabella lists him as a widower, which supports the theory that he was married twice.  James died at his home in Brant Township, near Walkerton, Ontario on May 1, 1901.  He was buried in the Walkerton Cemetery, but no headstone has been located. Catherine Unknown – wife of James Burrell
John's marriage registration with Isabella McGaw lists him as a widower, which supports the theory that he was married twice.  Records indicate his first wife's name was Catherine, but no records have been located to produce a surname, definitive proof of their marriage, or her demise. [2]
 
Isabella McGaw – wife of James Burrell
Isabella McGaw was born June 4, 1845 in Jamaica to Hugh and Elizabeth McGaw.  She was the wife of James Burrell, as well as the mother of Alice, and John Earl Burrell.  In 1906 she moved with her children from Walkerton, Ontario to Manitoba.  She appears in the 1906 census, along with her daughter and two grandsons, staying with her niece, Mrs. William (Sarah Burrell) Harvey in the Marquette District.  She also appears in the 1906 census, living with her son John Earl.  Isabella died on November 4, 1913 and was buried in the municipal cemetery in Brandon, Manitoba. Alice Beatrice Burrell was born to James and Isabelle (McGaw) Burrell on July 23, 1859 in Ontario.  She married William Henry Lang on July 29, 1903 in Brant Township, Bruce County, Ontario.  Alice was the mother of William Earl, Hugh St. Clair, and Edgar Allan Lang.  Her name appears on the gravestone of her husband and eldest son but a date of death is not indicated on the marker.  Family accounts say that she remarried after Henry's death but no other records for Alice Beatrice Burrell Lang have been located at this time. William Henry Lang – husband of Alice Beatrice Burrell
William Henry Lang was born in 1882 to Adolph and Mary (Addis) Lang.  He was a farmer and the husband of Alice Beatrice Burrell.  The family moved from Ontario to Manitoba in the spring of 1906, shortly after the birth of middle son, Hughson St. Clair.  Henry appears in the 1906 census as a hired hand in the household of Louis H. Fountain in the Marquette District of Manitoba.  The family appears in the 1916 census living together in the Marquette District.  Other events place the Langs in Oak River, Manitoba until at least 1928.  William Henry Lang died in 1945 and was buried in Prospect Cemetery in Toronto, Ontario. William Earl Lang was born to Henry and Alice (Burrell) Lang on July 8, 1904 in Walkerton, Ontario.  In October of 1918, Earl demonstrated superb farming skills, winning several prizes at a fair held by the Farm Boys' and Girls' Club of Blanshard Municipality.  He Later attended Wesley College in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  In 1926, Earl Lang traveled to Detroit, Michigan to visit his uncle John Earl Burrell.  When Earl's brother Allen died in 1928, Allen's obituary listed Earl as living in Detroit.  William Earl Lang died in 1959 and was buried with his father in Prospect Cemetery in Toronto, Ontario. 2.3.1.2 Hugh St. Clair Lang (Generation 4)

Hughson St. Clair Lang was born to Henry and Alice (Burrell) Lang on March 27, 1906 in Walkerton, Ontario.  Shortly after his birth the family moved to southwestern Manitoba.  Hugh attended the Oak River school.  He won an award for map skills at the Farm Boys' and Girls' Club of Blanshard Municipality Fair in October of 1921.  On Wednesday, February 27, 1924, Hugh St. Clair Lang sustained injuries in an explosion while working with chemicals at the Oak River school during the noon hour.  He died from those injuries on Friday, March 7 while in the Brandon Hospital.  His death came as a surprise to his parents, who were staying at Brandon with him, as the night before he had been particularly bright and improved in health.  Death was attributed to internal bleeding caused by broken glass which entered his chest at the time of the explosion.

A funeral was held on Sunday afternoon in the Union Church in Oak River with interment following in the Oak River Cemetery.  The building was so crowded, services in the Anglican church were cancelled on account of the funeral.  The obsequies were in charge of Rev. D. B. Kennedy.  Rev. F. Longmore assisted at the church.  The Boy Scouts, of which St. Clair was a member, acted as a guard of honor.  A large number of friends followed the remains to the cemetery, many going on foot.  The pall-bearers were Archie Black, Gus Higham, Arthur White, George English, Roy Gibbs and Gordon Smyth, pals of deceased. Edgar Allan Lang was born to Henry and Alice (Burrell) Lang on February 23, 1910 in Manitoba.  His name appeared in several articles in the Oak River newspaper concerning school activites.  On August 8, 1928 Edgar died at his home in Oak River, Manitoba from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.  He was buried with his brother Hugh in the Oak River Cemetery in Oak River, Manitoba. John Earl Burrell was born on May 16, 1865 in Walkerton, Ontario, Canada.  John Earl appears in the Winnipeg City Directories as proprietor and/or manager of the City Auto and Taxi Company starting in 1918.  Those entries ended in 1923 when he, his wife and daughter immigrated to Detroit, Michigan.  In Detroit John Earl worked as a bus driver.  He died on March 17, 1953 in the Detroit, Michigan area and was buried at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery near Southfield, Michigan. Marie Louise Huybrecht – wife of John Earl Burrell
Marie Louise Huybrecht was born in France on August 10, 1896, immigrating to Canada with her parents as an infant.  She became the wife of John Earl Burrell in St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Winnipeg on November 2, 1918.  Marie was the mother of Isabella, and Wallace Burrell.  She died on January 26, 1993 in Livonia, Michigan and was buried with John Earl at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery. Isabelle Marie Clotilde Burrell was born to John Earl and Marie (Huybrecht) Burrell on January 7, 1922 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  She spent her life as a police officer in the Detroit area, but never married.  Isabelle was also an accomplished bowler and golfer, winning much local acclaim.  She died in Livonia, Michigan on December 16, 1995 and was buried at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery. 2.3.2.2 Wallace Eugene Burrell (Generation 4)

Wallace Eugene Burrell was born to John Earl and Marie (Huybrecht) Burrell on February 23, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan.  On April 23, 1949 he married Dolores Elaine Munday.  They had five children.  Wallace Eugene Burrell died on May 23, 1998 in Oxford, Mississippi and his remains were cremated. [12]
 
Dolores Elaine Munday – wife of Wallace Eugene Burrell
Dolores Elaine Munday was born on March 27, 1929.  She was the wife of Wallace Eugene Burrell, as well as the mother of five children.  Dolores died on November 28, 1990 in Oxford, Mississippi and her remains were cremated. [13]
