The 1900 census record shows Donald McClain living in Clark Township, Johnson County, Indiana with his wife, Sarah E., and four children.  They had married in Johnson County around 1881.  For some reason, his youngest son, William (born 1899), is not listed on the census sheet with the family.  In 1909, he appears as Donil McClain on the marriage registration of his eldest daughter, Daisy.  The 1910 census finds Donel McClain married to the widow Jennie (McClain) Morgan and living in Needham Township with their son Donel McClain, Jr.  Johnson County WPA Index to Marriage Records show they were married on December 12, 1904 in Johnson County.  That marriage index also shows Donel marrying Katie Ann Brown on November 17, 1914, but the 1920 census states that he was divorced.  When Donel died, he was married to Anna (McClain) Pool, the widow of Millard Pool.

Donnell was engaged in farming all of his life until around 1921 when he was persuaded by Harry C. Hougham, mayor of Franklin, to move there and become the city street commissioner.  Donel had been a highway superintendent in Needham Township for many year prior and had lived on one of the mayor's farms.  Donel served four years in that position.  He also had a talent in the use of dynamite.  Donel was called upon for many years by farmers who wanted stumps or rocks removed from their tillable lands.  His experience and care in the matter were noted as he never had the slightest approach of an accident.
