Sarah E. Caplinger was born on November 6, 1858 to Paul and Sarah M. (Neeves) Caplinger of Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana.  She married Donald McClain in 1881.  Sarah moved to Indianapolis around 1909 and lived there until her death in 1929.  She first appeared in the R. L. Polk Indianapolis City Directory in 1910 while living at 409 S. Illinois Street.  Beginning in 1914, Sarah was listed in the city directories as the widow of Donald.  She was living at the home of her daughter, Stella O'Neil, when she died from bronchial pneumonia.  Sarah's sister, Catherine Haislup, was listed as the informant on Sarah's death certificate.  After funeral services at Fountain Square Christian Church, where she was a member of the congregation, Sarah was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Indianapolis. [1]

Donel McClain - husband of Sarah E. Caplinger
Donel McClain (a.k.a. Donnell, Donald, or Daniel McClain) was born to Mathias and Eliza (DeVore) McClain on June 22, 1859 in Indiana.  Some accounts trace Mathias' family back to Scotland in the early 1200s.  According to the census record, Donel's father and mother were born in Indiana and Missouri, respectively.  He first appears in the 1860 census as Daney in the household of his father in Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana.  In 1870, he appears with his family as Daniel McClain.  In the 1880 census, there is a Donald McClain, born in 1859, living with his grandfather, John L. McClain, and John's wife Mary A. McClain in Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana.  There are no census records for Indiana from 1890.

The 1900 census record shows Donald McClain living in Clark Township, Johnson County, Indiana with his wife, Sarah E., and four children.  They had married in Johnson County around 1881.  For some reason, his youngest son, William (born 1899), is not listed on the census sheet with the family.  In 1909, he appears as Donil McClain on the marriage registration of his eldest daughter, Daisy.  The 1910 census finds Donel McClain married to Jennie Caldwell and living in Needham Township with their son Donel McClain, Jr.  Johnson County WPA Index to Marriage Records show they were married on December 12, 1904 in Johnson County.  That marriage index also shows Donel marrying Katie Ann Brown on November 17, 1914, but the 1920 census states that he was divorced.  When Donel died, he was married to Anna Pool, the widow of Millard Pool.

Donel was engaged in farming all of his life until around 1921 when he was persuaded by Harry C. Hougham, mayor of Franklin, to move there and become the city street commissioner.  Donel had been a highway superintendent in Needham Township for many year prior and had lived on one of the mayor's farms.  Donel served four years in that position.  He also had a talent in the use of dynamite.  Donel was called upon for many years by farmers who wanted stumps or rocks removed from their tillable lands.  His experience and care in the matter were noted as he never had the slightest approach of an accident.

Donel McClain died at 7:00 AM on Thursday, June 27, 1929 in his home in Franklin, Indiana.  He had been suffering from arterio sclerosis and had been unable to leave his home for the last month of his life.  Funeral services were held from his residence on Saturday with the Rev. W. E. Brown, pastor of the Grace Methodist Church, officiating.  Many friends and relatives from outside Johnson county were in attendance.  Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.  Serving as casket bearers were; Earl Davis, Raymond McClain, Harry McClain, Max McClain, Lora McClain and Roscoe McClain, all nephews of the deceased.  Flowers were carried by; Fannie Pedro, Helen Witt, Eliza Hardin, Alene McClain and Lela Eytcheson.
