Paul Caplinger was born to Henry and Susan (Humble) Caplinger on October 10, 1822 in Kentucky.  Records indicate that his mother and father were born in Kentucky and Pennsylvania, respectively.  Paul had at least two brothers, Robert and John, both of whom died in Indianapolis less than a year before he did.  Paul was the father and common ancestor of the Caplinger families contained in this website.  He served in the U. S. Army during the Mexican-American War in the mid-1840s.  Paul Caplinger married Sarah M. Neaves in late 1850 in Carroll County, Kentucky and moved to the Indianapolis area around 1851.  He is listed as a farmer in census records, living in Pleasant or Clark Townships of Johnson County, Indiana in 1860, 1870 and 1880.  The 1900 census finds him and Sarah living with their daughter Anna (Caplinger) Johnson and her family in Indianapolis.  Paul died from heart disease on February 15, 1901 at 6:50 a. m. in Anna's house.  After funeral services were held at the residence, Paul was buried in Mt. Jackson cemetery in Indianapolis. [1]

Sarah M. Neaves - wife of Paul Caplinger
Sarah Mildred Neeves was born in Carroll county, Kentucky on November 25, 1832 to Jack and Mary Neaves.  Her father was listed in the 1850 census as a school teacher.  That census shows Sarah, age 17, along side her parents, a younger sister, Mary, and three younger brothers.  The eldest of those brothers, Burket B. Neaves, is buried in the Carrollton IOOF cemetery.  Sarah married Paul Caplinger (patriarch of the Caplinger family) on December 30, 1850 in Carrollton.  They moved to Indiana where she was the mother of nine Caplinger children.  Sarah died on June 10, 1923 at the home of her daughter, Anna (Caplinger) Johnson.  She was buried in Mt. Jackson cemetery in Indianapolis. [2]
