Long was born the Charles and Addie (DePeel) Long in Plainwell, Michigan on February 3, 1918.  For the most part Max experienced an upbringing that was reflective of the times: He attended local schools including Gobles High School, where he was quite the athlete who participated in track, football, and baseball.  Max was also a golden gloves boxer.  During the 1930s there were weekend fights in Otsego and Plainwell, which was where he usually went to box.  He went on to graduate from high school in 1939.  With a desire to serve his country, Max enlisted in the United States Air Force during the days of WWII.  His time in the military spanned from 1942 through 1945 during which time he served as a medical corpsman.  In recognition of his service, Max was awarded with a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.

Max met Frances H. Anderson on a blind date while he was stationed in Scotland.  They were married on May 4, 1945, in Scotland.  After the war they raised a family in Michigan.  To support his family Max worked as a driver and salesman for Cadillac Overall for over 30 years.  Max loved to golf and bowl.  He rolled a 300 game at the age of 71.  Max was also a master chess player who played online until just a few weeks before his death.  He also loved going mushroom hunting and had an impressive collection of bowling balls.  Max was a member of the Civitan Club and attended Milwood Christian Reformed Church.  When looking to get away, Max loved visiting Las Vegas more than anywhere else.  However, it was during a trip to Scotland, with his family by his side, that he had the time of his life as they visited the military base where he had been stationed during his time in the service.

She married Max C. Long in a hotel in Scotland in 1945.  Shortly after the birth of the young couple's first child Fran left her childhood home and bravely took sail for the shores of her new life in the U.S. on the Queen Mary.  In the United States, they raised five children.  Frances ran the home while also working for JC Penney and the IHS beer distributor.  Fran's joy was her family, and she worked hard to provide a safe, loving home centered in the same principles she grew up with in Scotland.  An accomplished seamstress in her younger years, Fran also grew to love knitting.  From her very first days in the US, Fran faithfully participated in The Overseas Brides’ Club.  For over 70 years Frances enjoyed the companionship of her fellow brides.
