According to U. S. Census records, Julia Teresa DePeel was born in 1860 in Canada.  She does not, however, appear in the 1861 Ontario census with the rest of her family.  Julia does appear in the 1870 U. S. Census living with her father and brother in the household of Daniel Corby in Erin Township, Macomb County, Michigan.  Julia is next found in 1872 listed, along with her sisters, as a juvenile inmate of the Home for the Friendless in Wayne County, Michigan.  Julia later appears in Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana when she married James M. Sowders on June 9, 1875.  In 1880, James and Julia were living in Indianapolis with their two eldest children, Mamie and George.  They lived in Indianapolis for more than thirty years, raising six children.  After James died in 1912, Julia married the widower John M. Hollingsworth.  Their nuptials were performed in Indianapolis on October 7, 1916.  In 1918 Julia was featured on the front page of the Indianapolis Star in an article about mothers of sons, and their sons who were serving overseas in World War I.  John and Julia Hollingsworth appear in the 1920 U. S. Census living with the family of Julia's youngest daughter, Margaret, who was married to Ivan Escott.  John died in early 1927.  Julia appears in the 1934 Indianapolis City Directory living at 1218 Woodlawn Drive, Indianapolis.  She died on March 10, 1937 in her home and was buried with her first husband, James, in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. James M. Sowders - first husband of Julia T. DePeel
James Milton Sowders was born in Shippingport, Kentucky on August 16, 1850.  He moved to Indianapolis, Indiana with his parents in 1869, where they launched a sucessful seafood business.  On June 9, 1875 he married Julia Teresa DePeel in Clarkstown, Indiana.  James was listed in various census records and city directories as a fish and oyster merchant, with a prominent business that he owned and ran for nineteen years.  After that, he ran a fish business in a booth at the city market for eleven years.  James died at his home on June 26, 1912.  Prior to his death, James had suffered a fall that resulted in injuries serious enough to keep him confined to his home for quite some time.  A funeral was held at the family residence on June 28, 1912 preceding his burial in Crown Hill Cemetery. John M. Hollingsworth - second husband of Julia T. DePeel
John M. Hollingsworth was born to Isaac and Elizabeth Hollingsworth in Howard County, Indiana on September 10, 1850 or 1851.  On April 6, 1907 he married Nellie Teresa Oliphant.  She died in 1912.  John married the widow Julia Sowders on October 7, 1916 in Indianapolis.  They appear together living with Julia's daughter Margaret (Sowders) Escot.  John died in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 3, 1927 and was buried with his previous wife, Nellie, two days later in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Ida May Sowders was born to James and Julia (DePeel) Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 29, 1877.  She married Edward W. Miller in June of 1908 and they had three children.  Ida married William H. Roth in Crown Point, Indiana in June of 1926.  They appear together in the 1930 census living in Indianapolis.  Ida appears in the 1940 census as a widow living with her daughter, Julia (Miller) Eden, and her family in Indianapolis.  The Edens appear in the Indianapolis City Directories through 1951.  After that the family moved to California.  In her brother's (James) obituary in 1966 Ida Roth is listed as a surviving sister, living in San Jose, California.  Ida M. Roth died on Saturday, October 7, 1967 in California.  Her death notice appeared in the Los Angeles Times the following day.  Ida was buried next to her daughter Julia Eden in Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills), Los Angeles. Edward W. Miller - husband of Ida May Sowders
Edward William Miller was born to Ernest and Minnie (Hofthoff) Miller in Indiana in 1877.  He was the father of Julia, Marie, and Kenneth Miller.  According to census records Edward worked as a painter and later as a machinist helper in a railroad shop.  On Edward's draft card in 1918, he is listed a missing the small finger on his right hand.  Edward died on Saturday, February 21, 1920 while he was an inmate at the Central State Hospital in Indianapolis.  His death certificate indicates that he was suicidal and that he was found after hanging himself in his room.  Edward W. Miller was buried in Crown Hill Cemetry in Indianapolis. [5]
 
William Henry Roth - second husband of Ida May Sowders
William Henry Roth was born in November of 1883 in Brown County, Indiana to William F. and Melvina (Shutts) Roth.  He appears in the 1900 census with his family in Cisne, Wayne, Illinois.  In 1903, William married Mamie J. Spalding in Illinois.  No other information concerning that marriage has been found.  William married Alma (Mackey) Renbelt in Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana in January of 1910 but is listed in the 1920 census as widowed and living with his parents on Woodlawn Avenue in Indianapolis.  William married Ida May (Sowders) Miller in Crown Point, Indiana in June of 1926.  William and Ida appear in the 1930 census living on Woodlawn Avenue in Indianapolis.  William appears at the same address in the Indianapolis City Directories through 1936.  Willam Henry Roth died on Friday, February 10, 1966 in Dayton, Ohio.  Funeral services were held the following Monday at the Kessler Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Miller officiating followed by burial in Springlawn Cemetery in New Paris, Ohio. [6]

Julia Wilhelmina Miller was born to Edward and Ida Miller in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 3, 1909.  She married Harold H. Eden in Hancock County, Indiana in 1929.  Julia died on November 11, 1961 in Valley Hospital in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California from ovarian cancer.  She was buried in Forest Lawn (Hollywood Hills) Cemetery.  Praiswater Funeral Home was listed as the funeral director on her death certificate. Harold Herman Eden was born to Lewis and Myrtle (Yelton) Eden on August 24, 1907 in Indianapolis.  He married Julia Wilhelmina Miller in 1929. Harold died on July 11, 1989 in Califirnia. [8]

George Franklin Sowders was born to James and Julia Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 17 1879.  George did not live an easy life.  On his World War I Draft Registration, in 1917, he was listed as having a paralyzed left arm.  George died on February 4, 1940 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Richard Randolph Sowders was born to James and Julia Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 14, 1881.  He married Gertrude DuBose in 1907 but the couple filed for divorce in 1911.  Richard married Josephine Linnaman in 1912 and they had a daughter, Dorothy.  Richard died on December 28, 1964 and was buried in Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis. Gertrude DuBose was born to Clarence C. and Anna B. (Robinson) DuBose in Birmingham, Alabama in October of 1889.  She appeared in the 1900 census living with her parents and sisters in Columbiana, Shelby County, Alabama.  Gertrude Dubose married Richard Sowders on March 25, 1907 in Indianapolis.  They appeared in the 1910 census, living in Indianapolis.  Gertrude's sister, Edith, was living with them.  She and Richard filed suit for divorce in Indianapolis at the beginning of May in 1911.  Gertrude married Harry T. Williams in 1916 in Newport, Campbell, Kentucky.  No other information on Gertrude has been located at this time. [15]
 
Josephine Ursula Linnaman - second wife of Richard Randolph Sowders
Josephine Ursula Linnaman was born in Indiana on June 22, 1896.  She married Richard Sowders on August 2, 1912 in Indianapolis.  Josephine and Richard ran the former Sowders Sea Food Stand for 60 years.  She was a member of Chapter 481 of the Order of the Eastern Star and was an auxiliary member of the Sahara Grotto.  Josephine died on April 6, 1973 in Methodist Hospital.  After funeral services at the Grinsteiner Funeral Home she and was buried with Richard in Washington Park East Cemetery. Dorothy Blanche Sowders was born to Richard and Josephine (Linnaman) Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 23, 1917.  She married Henry William Werner, Jr. in thev Zion Evangelical Church in Indianapolis on July 29, 1934.  Together they raised a son and a daughter.  Henry and Dorothy took over the Sowder Seafood Stand in the City Market when her parents retired.  Dorothy operated the stand until she retired in 1991.  She was a 50-year member of the Brookside Order of the Eastern Star.  Dorothy died on Wednesday, November 8, 2000.  Funeral services were held were held at the Grinsteiner Funeral Home on the following Saturday followed by a graveside service and burial in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis. Henry William Werner, Jr. - husband of Dorothy Blanche Sowders
Henry William Werner, Jr. was born April 3, 1914 in Indianapolis to H. W. and Edith Werner.  He married Dorothy B. Sowders in 1934.  Together they owned and operated Werner's Seafood Market in the City Market.  He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, the Brookeside Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.  Henry died on Saturday Decemebr 28, 1968 at Community Hospital in Indianapolis.  He was 54 years old.  Funeral services were held were held at the Grinsteiner Funeral Home on the following Thursday followed by burial in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis. Julia Etta Sowders was born to James and Julia Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 2, 1885.  She married Walter Charles Katterhenry and they raised a daughter.  She also bore a son, who died in infancy.  Julia died on Thursday, April 22, 1965 at her daughter's home in Decatur, Georgia.  Funeral Services were held the following Sunday at the Trinity Chapel in Decatur.  A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and the Rev. T. W. Tucker officiated.  Additional services were held Tuesday in Flanner & Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary in Indianapolis followed by burial in Washington Park East Cemetery. [19]
 
Walter Charles Katterhenry - husband of Julia Etta Sowders
Walter Charles Katterhenry was born on a farm near Huntingburg, Indiana on Decembr 24, 1883.  He married Julia Etta Sowders in Indianapolis on February 4, 1908 and was the father of Marian V. Katterhenry.  Walter was a wholesale fruit and vegetable dealer for forty years before retiring in 1949.  He was a member of the New York Street Evangelical United Bretheren Church.  Walter and Julia moved to Decatur, Georgia in 1962 and lived with their daughter's family.  Walter died on October 25, 1965 in Decatur.  A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur was in charge of local arrangements.  His remains were transported to Indianapolis where funeral services were held in the Flanner & Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary.  Walter was buried with his wife in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis. Marian Violet Katterhenry was born to Walter and Julia Katterhenry in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 08, 1908.  She attended Butler Uninversity where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.  While at Butler shemet Frank B. White.  They married on June 21, 1930 in Indianapolis.  Making their home in the Louisville, Kentucky area they raised two sons and a daughter.  In the 1950 census Marian is listed as a teacher in the local public schools.  Marian was living in Georgia, with Frank, when he died suddenly in 1970.  It is believed that Marian went to live with one of her children after Frank's death, but no confirmed information about Marian Katterhenry White has been located after 1970. Frank B. White was born to Oscar and Adaline (Vanderbeck) White around 1906 in Mooreland (Henry County), Indiana.  He had four brothers and six sisters.  Frank later attended Butler University in Indianapolis where he participated in basketball and track.  In 1929, his senior year, he was captain of the school's basketball team and won a national title.

After graduation, Frank was hired at Louisville (Kentucky) Male High School to be the basketball coach.  In 1930, he married Marian Violet Katterhenry at the Broadway Evangelical church in Indianapolis.  They made their home in the Louisville, Kentucky area where Frank continued coaching basketball at Male High School with great sucess.  His team was state runner-up in 1932 and reached the semi-finals the next year.  In 1938 Frank was elevated to be the school's athletic director.  In 1941 Frank resigned his coaching position and worked for the Indiana Ordinance Works (a part of the Dupont Corporation) in Charlestown, Indiana as a recreation director.  Frank continued community involvement, and is noted as having helped in coaching a girl's all-star softball team later in 1941.

The 1950 census shows Frank, Marian and the children living in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, which is located south of Louisville.  He is listed as a manager of an ice cream store.  Around 1958, Frank and Marian moved to Decatur, Georgia where he was a salesman for Treasure Island, a division of the J. C. Penney Company.  Frank died suddenly from a heart attack on Sunday, September 20, 1970.  At the time of his death he was returning home from a game of golf.  Funeral services were held on the following Tuesday at the A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur with the Rev. Larry D. Kennon officiating.  Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Cemetery.  His obituaries were published in newspapers in several cities, including Atlanta, Indianapolis and Louisville. [22]

An infant male was born to Walter and Julia Katterhenry in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1910.  He died in October and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. [23]

Margaret Sowders was born to James and Julia Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 29, 1893.  She married Murray Arnold Parker in 1910, but they divorced shortly afterwards.  Margaret later married Ivan E. Escott.  In her brother's (James) obituary in 1966 she is listed as a surviving sister, living in Montclair, New Jersey.  Margaret died in Montclair in August of 1976 and was buried next to Ivan in Rosedale Cemetery in Orange, New Jersey. Murray Arnold Parker was born in Ellendale, North Dakota on July 25, 1888.  He married Margaret Sowders on September 21, 1910 in Indianapolis.  Murray died in Chicago, Illinois in October of 1965. [25]
 
Ivan E. Escott - second husband of Margaret Sowders
Ivan E. Escott was born to Matthew and Mary (Arless) Escott in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 13, 1885.  During World War I, he served in the Army.  Ivan married Margaret (Sowders) Parker at St. Pauls Epicopal Church in Louisville, Kentucky on April 12, 1918 and they had a son, Ivan, Jr, in 1919.  After the birth of Ivan, Jr., the family moved to Passaic, New Jersey.  Ivan worked for the Home Insurance Company of New York City beginning in their Evansville, Indiana office in 1913 as a special agent.  He made maps of small towns and checked rate schedules.  Seven years later, he became assistant general inspector of the company, and in 1923, he was named general inspector.  From 1929 until 1935, Ivan managed the service department for Home Insurance.  Shortly after, he was named assistant secretary of the company and then was named a vice president in 1936.  The family continued to live in the New York City area as Ivan ascended the ladder at his work.  While serving as executive vice president of the Home Insurance Company, he devised a plan for rating fire insurance risks on a multiple-location basis.  The plan, which was accepted by the New York State Insurance Commission, became known as the Escott Plan.  Ivan was president of the Factory Insurance Association and was recognized as an expert on fire insurance in the insurance industry.  He retired from the Home Insurance Company as an Executive Vice-President in 1952, but continued on as a member of the Board of Director of the firm until his death.  Ivan died at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, New Jersey on Monday, April 2, 1962 following a heart attack.  Services were held at St. Luke's Church and he was buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Essex County, New Jersey. Ivan E. Escott, Jr. was born to Ivan and Margaret (Sowders) Escott in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 16, 1919.  His family soon moved to Passaic, New Jersey, where he grew up.  Ivan graduated from Indiana University and had planned to study law until World War II intervened.  Ivan joined the Army Air Force in 1943 and was trained as a B-17 pilot.  Based in Italy in 1944, he flew thirty-five successful missions as a B-17 aircraft commander, and returned to the United States in early 1945.  Ivan continued flying in the Air Force Reserves for 20 years, earning the rank of lieutenant colonel.  Following the war, he married Johnnie Maude Beeson.  Ivan began studies at Columbia Law School in New York City, but decided instead to return to aviation.  Mr. Escott joined Pan America World Airways (Pan Am) in 1945.  He spent the next 34 years as a navigator, pilot and then captain for Pan Am, retiring in 1979.  He held a perfect flying record and was a highly skilled check navigator and check pilot.  Mr. Escott frequently spent time as a trainer for Pan Am.  Following his retirement from Pan Am, he spent several years training pilots for Flight Safety International before he retired to Naples, Florida.  There, Ivan was an original member of Imperial Golf Estates Golf Club in Naples, and a member of the Quiet Birdmen Association.  He volunteered at Naples Community Hospital and the Parkinson's Association of South Florida.

Capt. Ivan Escott Jr., died Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at his home in Naples after a ten-year battle with Parkinson's Disease.  He was surrounded by his family when he passed.  A memorial service was held on Saturday at the Fuller Funeral Home in Naples.  A family service of inurnment was held the following summer in Essex Fells, New Jersey. Johnnie Maude Beeson - wife of Ivan E. Escott, Jr.
Johnnie Maude Beeson was born in Greenville, Mississippi on August 20, 1926.  She worked as a flight attendant in the late 1940s.  She married Ivan E Escott, Jr., and they had a daughter and a son.  Johnnie was an avid golfer and a member of the Montclair (New Jersey) Golf Club.  She was also a member of the Imperial Golf Club on Naples, Florida.  Jonnie died on Friday, November 13, 1987.  Services were held on Tuesday at St. Peters Episcoal Church in Essex Fells, New Jersey.  Her remains were cremated. James Milton Sowders, Jr. was born to James and Julia Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 20, 1895.  He was educated in the Indianapolis public school system.  James was a veteran of World War I where he served in France with the One Hundred and Forty-fifth Field Hospital as a stretcher bearer for wounded soldiers.  Field hospitals were the first stations behind the front lines after emergency aid was given to wounded men.  Stretcher bearers were used for transporting wounded from the field hospitals to the evacuation hospitals, which usually about five miles further from the front.  Back home, James married Elizabeth Marion Fowler and worked for a gear manufacturer.  He was a member of the Woodruff Place Baptist Church.  James later worked as a salesman for the Wharf Seafood Market for thirteen years, retiring in May of 1966.  James died in his home on Monday, June 29, 1966.  Funeral arrangements were handled by the Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel and he was buried in Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis. Elizabeth Marion Fowler - wife of James Milton Sowders
Elizabeth Marion Fowler was born in Indiana on July 4, 1900.  She married James Milton Sowders on September 3, 1919 in Indianapolis and they had a son.  Elizabeth was a lifelong member of the Woodruff Place Baptist Church and a member of the choir.  she was also an accomplished soloist (singer) and sang for many local funeral homesaround the Indianapolis area. Elizabeth died on Saturday, May 13, 1986 in Community Hospital.  Funeral arrangements were handled by the Shirley Brothers Funeral Home with calling held at the Irving Hill Chapel.  Services were held at the church on the following Tuesday.  Elizabeth was buried with her husband in Washington Park East Cemetery. Ted Meredith Sowders was born to James and Elizabeth (Fowler) Sowders in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 11, 1920.  He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis in 1938 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII.  Ted attended the University of Chicago where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Butler University, and his Masters degree from Purdue University.  Ted married Bettie B. Lightner in Utica, Ohio in 1946.  He was employed as a project manager for the Allison Division of General Motors for thirty-four years, and then as an Air Pollution Engineer for the State of Indiana for ten years.  He was a ninety-one year member of Woodruff Place Baptist Church, a Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 190, and a Commissioner of BSA Crossroads of America, Pioneer District, for 30 years.

Ted M. Sowders, Sr., died on Friday, January 8, 2016. Visitation was held on Tuesday, at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel.  Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Woodruff Place Baptist Church, followed by burial next to Bettie in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Fishers, Indiana. [31]
 
Bettie B. Lightner - wife of Ted Meredith Sowders
Bettie B. Lightner was born in Utica, Ohio to Henry and Ruby (Melick) Lightner on September 28, 1921.  Bettie served her country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where she was a Ward Supervisor Nurse.  After the war, she was a Registered Nurse for many years with Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana.  She married Ted M. Sowders on June 9, 1946 and they had two sons and a dusghter.  After retirement, Bettie was a volunteer at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis.  Bettie was a 68-year member of the Woodruff Place Baptist Church.

Bettie B. Sowders, of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2014.  Visitation was held on Sunday at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel on E. Washington Street in Indianapolis.  Funeral services were held Monday at the Woodruff Place Baptist Church.  Burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. [32]
